On Wednesday we camped at the athletic fields. We had to set up the tents and collected fire wood. later in the night after dinner we went out and made a camp fire with the wood we collected earlier. Then we made Smores, after we told ghost stories and read some of the Hunger Games book. We stayed up and hung out for the rest of the night before we went to sleep, and it was cold!

Ross Trails

Today is Tuesday, one day before the camp night.

This morning we went to hike around the campus, Ms Pollina gave us the map of Ross campus that was before 2005 and let us hike and find the Tennis Center in the map. We went in to the woods in our campus and clean the branches and trees that blocked our way. Finally we used compass to find tennis center

This afternoon we have a big match: capture the flag. We separate in to 2 groups, green and yellow, we need to hide our flag and try to find another team’s flag. After we found it we need to bring it to Ms Pollina then we win. The final score is 1:1, it was a good day.

Shelter and Celebration

Today is Monday. This week is the last week of Field Academy.

In the morning, we all prepared for the Wednesday’s camping. Teachers taught us how to build up a stable camp in the CWB. We tried to straight the very big pole and make it go through the tent, and make two poles work. Then, we had our own tent. We had to build up tent first, and then warp it back. Some boys group built up tent swiftly, but the girls group was not. Teachers helped us when we tried to build up our own group tent. After building up tent, we learned how to get pole and tent back, and wrapped it back to bag. That was very fun.

Everyone also showed his power point of edible food. Every student introduced one kind of edible plant. It was really cool, because everyone can get more knowledge about plants.

Then, we went back to classroom. We went to lab for finishing our cone flour. We have already dried our acorns. The next step to make flour is using food processor to ground the acorns into flour. Ms. Pollina will use this flour to make bread on Friday. Everyone was excited about homemade bread.

HGD115

In the afternoon, we built shelter. That was really fun. About 3-4 students in one group, they should find a place in the woods, then built the shelter by branches, leaves and barks. The first step for shelter is getting big branches to make frame of shelter. Every group had different design. Some of the groups used triangle frame, some of groups used rectangle frame. We had various design of shelter. Then, students found some small branches to fill the open space. The most interesting thing in building up the shelter is using barks to prevent the rain into the shelter. Ms. Pollina told students that the barks on died trees are water prove. As a result, students all used barks on the outside.

At three o’clock, the café prepared ice cream party for all students. Everyone could eat ice cream in café. They also provided some fruits and sauces for us. Everyone was happy.

Snowy Hike

On Friday morning, I had a discussion regarding to the content of Hunger game. It was very intriguing. It helped us to improve our listening and speaking skills. A lot of tributes try to participate in the discussion. Some of the points are really insightful.
We played the board game for one round. Every one was having fun. They all were very exciting. But,  I felt sad, because I was killed. Though playing the game, I thought we improved our cooperative skills and gained the necessary skills to survive in the extreme environment. After that, we have half an hour to read the book.
I played the Dodge-ball. I thought they are very fun. The game play made all of us energetic and warm during the cold winter day. Every one were so enthusiastic. We were expecting the next game.
We went hiking at afternoon until 2:30pm. It was very fun. We followed the deer foot-steps during the hiking, but we didn’t see any deer, which makes me feel a little bit sad. However, we lucky left our own foot-steps. I thought it was interesting that hearing the creak under our food. It made me feel refresh through wandering in such a whiteness and purity. We picked up the snow along the way and made snow ball out of it. We played the snow balls with each other. I thought this hiking helped us to strength us friendship. After that,  we went back to school, what away was hot chocolate and mushmallow. It was really a surprise from Peter. I was really appreciate Peter having the cafe prepare all of the stuffs for us. It is a really remarkable day. After enjoying the hot chocolate, we came back to classroom and then watched the second episode of Hunger game, which called ” Hunger game: Catching Fire”. Although we didn’t finish it, I thought it was very unforgettable. The reasons were pretty obvious. The second episode had very exciting and brilliant plots. Secondly, I were looking forward to watching the rest of it.
I love Friday.

While we were waiting for the beef jerky finish cooking, we went to Chatfield’s Hole on Two Holes of Water for a hike. The guy who led us is named Steve. He wore a light orange wool hat, a dark green jacket with a khaki pants, he also brought a portfolio and knife. He introduced to us many edible fruits some non-edible fruit.  The other half of us were led by a woman named Anita.  They work for The Group for the East End.

In today’s game, we finally have our first prey in the game. It was Renya, he died when when Andy rolled a 2.  He made himself a monster and can now kill as many as he can. Also Linda and Ollie died in the second round, and they reborn as two horrible monsters in the game.

At last, the beef jerky taste very good. Foods bring the sadness away from us.

The half way point!

Today we had a lot of fun. In the morning, we read the hunger game and we took a quiz after the reading. After the quiz we were separated into two groups. My group went to the CWB to have a archery test. Another group were staying in the classroom and they learned how to do CPR. In the afternoon we played the hunger game in our classroom. After a few rounds of hunger game, we went to senior building to make beef jerky. Me and my team cut the beef and others made sauce. After all of that we will put the beef in the fridge and wait until tomorrow.

Beef and Beaches

Today is Tuesday, when we went into the classroom which in the High School building. We saw a box on the table. That means we have some new things to do. So we are so excited about today.

HGD73

There are some words on the box, “dehydrator & jerky maker”. That means we will make some jerky. Then Ms. Pollina explained us what it is in the box and gave us three questions. How to use jerky maker? What cut of beef is best for jerky. And marinade recipes. Ms. Pollina gave us 15 minutes to find the answers. After 15 minutes, we were talking about the answers. We need raw beef, 5 to 6 pounds of purchase, and some flavor. Ms. Pollina said she will go shopping this afternoon after school and we will make jerky tomorrow afternoon.

Then, we finished the questions, and we had a test about our reading. When we finished our test, Ms. Pollina said some of us will have CPR training this morning and some of us will have archery competition and practice.

HGD711 HGD710

Around 9:00am, the teacher who teaches us CPR came to the classroom. I and other tributes that also have archery training we went to the CWB. When we reached CWB, Mr. Drossel said he had a meeting at that time, so we have dodgeball competition 1 vs 1. After that, we had dodgeball game 6 vs 6. Then, Mr. Drossel came back, so we had the archery competition first. We check ring number to decide who is the winner. The closer ring to the middle has higher scores. After they finished the competition, we had the archery practice for another competition on tomorrow.

HGD79 HGD78

Around 11:00, we finished archery practice and we went to the lunch. After the lunch, we had a break. At 1:00pm, we all gather in CWB. Then we went to the Northwest Harbor. It is a county park. We went to there to find mussels. There is sea and beach. That is very beautiful. We found lots of mussels on the beach and walked along the beach. We also climbed the sand mountain we had a lot of fun. After that, we came back to the classroom. Ms. Pollina gave us 10 minutes for break. Then, we had our game. Everyone threw the dice and moved as the number on the dice. We also wrote down what we will do in the second round of the game. Then, today is over.

In conclusion, we had a lot of fun today. Although we are tired, we are looking forward to later days.

Let the games begin

Today is Monday, when our class has already started for a whole week. All of us are keen on the different activities and teaching so far. So we were so excited to begin the challenging class today.

When we gathered together at our classroom in High School Building in the morning, Mrs. Pollina mentioned everyone that we would have a hiking later. To be honest, I love hiking with friends. It is a good opportunities for me to get close to the nature and relax. I hardly go hiking before because the school didn’t give me any chance to do that. However, my class has a big relationship to the environment. Therefore, every time I heard that we have hiking, I just started to imagine how interesting it would be.

HGD62 HGD61

We had hiking last week, which was so much fun; but this time, it is more difficult and challenging. Mrs. Pollina gave everyone a map and a compass. There were 15 special points; we need to write down our direction when we pass the signs. Using the compass is the only way that can help us. We put the map on the binder, grasp a panel, and wait to go.

The hiking place was not far away from school this time; it is on the north of the East Hampton. It is called The Grace Estate. There were nearly 3 miles in total. After 15 minutes’ drive, we arrived the region and then we began to walk. The path was peaceful; I enjoyed the crow of birds and the sounds of leaves by breeze. I saw some houses nearby the path; they were all fancy and quiet. Sometimes I had to use the compass to figure out what my direction was, otherwise, I would not know which way I should choose when the path was branched off. Unfortunately, some of us walked on wrong paths and had to be called back by teachers. The most attractive part of this tour was the way we pass by the beach. Many seagulls soared upon the blue and clear sea, which is called Northwest Harbor. The wind from the sea was so strong that I am not able to hear what my friend’s saying. I will not forget the entrancing scenery.

HGD64 HGD63

In the afternoon, we had a game called The Cornucopia Battle. It was about each of us stood around the small objects. When Mrs. Pollina gave us the order, we would rush to them and grasp as much as we can. Different objects represented different resources we will use in Hunger Games. For example, the rings will represent weapons. Furthermore, we had flags surrounded our waist. If we lost our flags, we would not be supposed to gain any more resources. The whole competition was short but intense. Eventually, everyone received some small pieces of sheets which were represented our resources.

HGD65

After we went back to our class with our “resources”, Mrs. Pollina show us the big map of our Hunger Games. It was a board game. All of us had our own chess piece, which represented our characters. We rolled the dices to know how far could our characters move. Meanwhile, we wrote down what would we do on a paper each round and then handed it in. We played the first round as the practice. The game was a little complicated for us but we were fine soon.

In conclusion, we had a tired but meaningful day today, I can’t wait to imagine the fun tomorrow.
