Pitch Day!

On the last day of iLab Field Academy, the students presented their projects. Each team or individual had 4 minutes to talk about their project and fielded questions for 2-3 minutes. The students discussed their motivations for choosing their topic, the steps they took to complete the project, the challenges and barriers they encountered, and the next steps they would take if they continued with the project. Project Time!

Returning to school after our “Not Much Snow At All” Day, the students got right into working on their projects. They are working independently and in groups using technology to create new products. Some examples of projects include a 360 video on the Hamptons, a solar race car, a model of a futuristic house, and aerial GoPro camera mount. We are excited to see how much the students progress with their projects!

Virtual Reality Experiences

It’s time for Week 2! We began the day with a design challenge in which they designed products for “extraordinary” people (including a spy, superhero, pirate, and future child). This activity introduced the students to a rapid form of design thinking and required thinking about how a potential user’s lifestyle affects the products they use.

Then, the students worked on creating virtual reality experiences inside a web browser using a framework called A-Frame. Click a student’s name below to see their VR experience. These are best viewed on a mobile phone. To get the full VR experience, you will need to use a Google Cardboard. Finally, the students spend the reminder of the day working on their project proposals.

Tech Immersion

Today was a busy day for the students. First, they participated in the 20 Circle Challenge, which taught them not to put constrains on their creativity. Then, they finished their 3D models and began printing them on the lab’s 3D printers. After lunch, the students participated in a tech immersion workshop to learn more in-depth about the technology in iLab. Four stations were set up for virtual reality, robotics, littleBits, and “solder and solar.” Students spend 30 minutes at each station engaging with the technology. Hopefully, the time spent in these stations will get them thinking about the projects they will begin next week.

Rube Goldberg

Today, students learned about Rube Goldberg and the creative machines he inspired. They were then tasked with working in teams and creating their own Rube Goldberg machines. The teams overcame many failures and used trial and error to eventually create successful machines. Right before lunch, the students also participated in a friendly dodgeball game. In the afternoon, the students began creating 3D models using TinkerCAD.

Day 0 (1)

The first day of iLab Field Academy was a success! The students participated in the Marshmallow Challenge where each team attempted to build the highest structure with a marshmallow sitting on top, using only spaghetti, tape, and string. The rest of the day was spent learning HTML and CSS on Codeacademy and then sketching and creating personal websites. After lunch, students also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in technology in the lab.
